This is a semi-companion film to the Anna Wintour documentary The September Issue, offering a fulsome, admiring account of the Harper’s Bazaar/Vogue fashion editor, whose magazine career lasted from the late 1930s to the early 70s. Directed by Vreeland’s granddaughter-in-law, and drawing heavily on audio tapes recorded by US journalist and litterateur George Plimpton, Vreeland’s pronouncements dominate the film, discoursing on everything from Jack Nicholson to the Belle Époque. She’s entertaining enough, and like most fashion docs, it’s a mine of pop-cultural history, but the unswervingly generous assessment of her achievements and permanently arch vocal style become a little wearying.
